Next week, it’s the cattle manure beat

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Bryn Levy, the new WP intern
The intern started work here last week. Each year, The Western Producer provides an internship to a student from the University of Regina journalism program, and Bryn Levy is the latest model. He introduced himself in a column within the Producer’s Sept. 16 issue, which you can find elsewhere on www.producer.com.
Levy began his first week with the usual myriad introductions to staffers, none of whose names he was likely to remember five minutes later. It takes some time to get familiar with everyone. Then there was the job-related paperwork, lunch from nearby Prairie Meats and the larding on of several assignments due by week’s end.
By the second day, Levy was covering a visit from prime minister Stephen Harper at the Diefenbaker Centre and exploring the intricacies of BSE spread via phone interviews. Clearly, he is a quick study.

Agriculture needs to prepare for government spending cuts

As government makes necessary cuts to spending, what can be reduced or restructured in the budgets for agriculture?

And it wasn’t a bad introduction to the world of agricultural journalism. This week, Levy was immersed in coverage of the Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference in Saskatoon, a process involving numerous speakers and concepts.
In between listening to speeches, Levy posed in a Western Producer touque so his photo could be used in a contest promotion related to first frost dates on the Prairies.
Next week, who knows? Will he visit the Queen? Land a major agricultural news scoop? Hang from the fluorescent light fixture over his cubicle? Or get tapped to write one of those inevitable stories about livestock manure?
We are happy to have Levy with us for a few months, whatever his assignments prove to be.
