Sask. companies form pulse-based foods partnership

Two Saskatchewan-based companies are joining forces to move more pulse-based products into the retail sector.

AGT Food and Ingredients from Regina and Saskatoon-based ulivit will use $11.3 million from Protein Industries Canada to process pea, lentil and faba protein concentrates into high moisture meat analogue, texturized pulse protein, tempeh, tofu, pasta and non-dairy analogues.

Then these ingredients will be developed into market-ready foods.

AGT is a well known large player in the pulse sector, while ulivit is a smaller company started three years ago by two women entrepreneurs.

Trump’s tariffs take their toll on U.S. producers

U.S. farmers say Trump’s tariffs have been devastating for growers in that country.

PIC CEO Bill Greuel said the collaboration of the two is an exciting, classic example of how the protein supercluster is supposed to work.

“Secondly, (is) its benefit to Canadians, from the farmer growing the pulse crops who will now have more options to sell their product closer to home, to the processors and packagers in the middle who employ Canadians across the country, to the consumer looking to introduce more tasty and innovative plant-protein products into their diet,” he said in a news release.

Some products could be on store shelves by later this year.

This is the seventh PIC project announced in the last year and a call for Expressions of Interest is currently open.
