While some complain honey prices are hanging a bit low this year, one Manitoba beekeeper said it’s really the unusually high prices from last year beginning to level off.

“Prices were down for a long time and then they were playing catch-up and probably overshot where it should have gone like any market will do,” said Terry Fehr of Gladstone, Man.

Honey producers in Manitoba are now making 97 cents to $1 per pound. That’s down from $1.30 a year ago, but nowhere close to the devastating market crash nearly 10 years ago.

Over the past five years, honey prices have gone from 65 cents to $1 per lb., he said.

The dip this year could be the result of some markets showing resistance to the dramatic increase. Also, Argentina had a healthy honey crop last year and is also bringing in a good supply this year.

The main markets for Manitoba honey are Eastern Canada, Europe and the United States.
