Saskatchewan agriculture minister Eric Upshall was in North Dakota last week promoting the province as the ideal home for a bison processing plant.
He toured the North American Bison Co-operative plant at New Rockford, which was built as a new generation co-op, and met with the board and management.
“It hasn’t been confirmed but their board is considering expanding their operation into Canada and we feel that Saskatchewan is the place they should be,” Upshall said in an interview.
“We let them know that and told them why. I think we’ve got a relatively good chance of getting it. We are, I think you might say, aggressively pursuing the operation.”
Upshall said the new generation co-op model, where producers purchase shares, which give them delivery rights, fits well in Saskatchewan.
He also said the province’s bison industry is expanding and will complement beef production.
