Manitoba’s chief medical examiner has called an inquest into the death of Perry Vandenberghe, a 49-year-old United Grain Growers employee who died while working in a grain elevator at Souris.
The date of the inquest has not been set.
Vandenberghe was changing bolts on the motor drive shaft of the elevator when the shaft fell on him. He and the shaft then fell about 1.5 metres.
Vandenberghe died from suffocation.
The inquest is expected to uncover the circumstances of the death to determine if safety procedures were in place and followed. It’s hoped the review will prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future, said a news release.
Souris is about 40 kilometres southwest of Brandon.
