An opposition MP from Ontario says Canada should establish a sustainable food strategy that will allow Canadian farmers to produce quality food for the next 20 years.

Barry Devolin, the Conservative representative from Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, said he would introduce a private member’s motion in the House of Commons at his first opportunity.

The motion was developed with input from Devolin’s local farm council. It will ask the Commons standing committee on agriculture to hold public consultations in each province and territory on topics such as on-farm biosecurity, the environmental and social impacts of food production and threats to national food security. The committee would be required to submit a report including a food strategy within a year of the motion’s passing.

“In my opinion, preserving the ability to feed ourselves should be a priority for every Canadian,” Devolin said in a News release

“This isn’t just about helping farmers or protecting family farms. This is an important issue of food security and national sovereignty.”

MPs are scheduled to return to the Commons from their summer break on Sept. 26.
