Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available for Dec. 31 , but was $43.19 Dec. 18.

U.S. hogs averaged $50.85 on a carcass basis Dec. 31, down from $51.09 Dec. 18.

The U.S. pork cutout was $78.58 per hundredweight Dec. 31, up from $71.47 Dec. 18.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Dec. 31 was 1.838 million, up from 1.675 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 1.384 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 2 Signature Four price was C$143.07 per 100 kilograms, down from $151.56.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $141.07, down from $149.56, HyLife was $152.44, down from $160.30, and OlyWest was $139.70, down from $150.40. OlyWest 2021 was $160, down from $167.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $160.40, down from $161.72.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $3.50 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and heifers on light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.85 for prime bulls and $4.70-$4.85 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$4 per lb. hog hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.70-$3.85. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation, and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 286 sheep and lambs and three goats sold Dec. 28. A light run of sheep traded at steady prices. Lambs traded at stronger prices. There were too few goats to establish a market.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 638 sheep and 171 goats sold Dec. 21.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $340-$400 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $360-$405, 70-85 lb. were $340-$390, 86-105 lb. were $300-$350 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$280. Wool rams were $155-$295 per cwt. Cull ewes were $160-$280.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$375 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $345-$370, 70-85 lb. were $330-$365, 86-105 lb. were $300-$345 and 106 lb. and heavier were $255-$265. Hair rams were $160-$225 per cwt. Cull ewes were $160-$395.
