High winds causing havoc in Saskatchewan

Wind gusting to more than 100 km-h downed trees, caused power outages and blew semi-trailer units off highways in Saskatchewan today.

Much of the province was under an Environment Canada wind warning throughout the day.

The wind also combined with temperatures above zero to create extremely icy roads.

Those conditions caused a Sun West School Division bus en route to Biggar at 8:50 a.m. to slide off a grid road into the ditch and tip on to its side.

None of the seven children on the bus at the time was injured; neither was the driver.

RCMP reported the bus was travelling well below the speed limit because of the conditions. Buses in the Biggar and Landis area were suspended for the rest of the day because of the wind and road conditions.
