Two federal party leaderships will now be decided next year.
The NDP announced May 15 it will select its new leader between Sept. 17 and Oct. 31, 2017.
The Conservatives earlier announced their leadership process would end May 27, 2017.
Nominations for the NDP race to replace Tom Mulcair open July 2, 2016.
“Council has given potential candidates a time frame that will allow for a fair and competitive race, while giving enough time for the new leader to prepare for the general election,” said NDP president Marit Stiles in a release issued after the federal council met to decide the leadership process.
The leader will be elected by secret ballot. Nominees with the fewest number of votes will drop off the ballot until one receives 50 percent plus one.
The Conservative leader will be elected by secret, preferential ballot.
Three MPs have announced their leadership bids so far: Kellie Leitch, Maxime Bernier and Michael Chong.
