The Canadian Grain Commission has released its first preliminary quality report on this year’s Western Canadian durum crop.

Based on early producer returns to the CGC’s harvest sample program, mean protein in No. 1 CWAD from southwestern Saskatchewan stood at 11.5 percent.

That number was based on 82 samples received prior to Oct. 1.

Mean protein in No. 2 CWAD, also from southwestern Saskatchewan, was listed at 11.2 percent, based on 64 samples.

Last year, mean protein on No. 1 CWAD samples submitted from across Western Canada ranged from 12.3 percent in Alberta to 13.3 percent in southeastern Saskatchewan.

Agriculture, agri-food groups make bid for spot in Carney’s economic agenda

A coalition of producer and agri-business groups is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to make Canadian agriculture part of his economic agenda.

The 10-year average for No. 1 CWAD across the West ranges from 13.0 percent to 13.2 percent.

Early quality data from the CGC’s harvest sample program appears to support industry predictions that this year’s wheat crop will produce heavier-than-normal yields but lower-than-average protein.

In CWB’s latest pool return outlook issued Sept. 26, projected returns for most crops and grades were lower. Returns for high protein CWRS, however, were higher, reflecting strengthening demand for top quality milling wheat.

Early delivery pool returns for No. 1 CWRS 14.5 percent protein were listed at $295 on Sept. 26, up $4 from mid-September.

Annual pool returns for the same crop were listed at $298, up $3.

Projected returns for No. 1 CWAD in early delivery and annual pools ranged from $22 to $26 per tonne lower.
