A Hutterite colony south of Lethbridge has won the first ever Canadian Poultry Sustainability Award.

New York Colony and poultry boss Levi Hofer received the honor Oct. 29 at the Canadian Poultry Sustainability Symposium in Guelph, Ont., for table eggs and overall poultry operations.

The colony was praised for its progressive approach and outreach, as well as attention to animal welfare and environmental responsibility.

An Egg Farmers of Alberta news release said judges for the award “felt that Mr. Hofer’s social outreach initiatives and efforts to communicate all of the wonderful things that the egg industry is doing to government, industry and the public went above and beyond in terms of ensuring the long term success and sustainability of the Canadian egg industry.”
