To the Editor:
I have a hard time understanding the thinking, reasoning and logic behind a single desk Canadian Wheat Board. If for a moment we could forget the infinite intelligence and wisdom of socialism, we might see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The government of Canada is willing to negotiate with producers and provide an option where they can sell their wheat to the CWB, or opt out and go on their own to find a private buyer. I see that as an opportunity where the producer can choose the best of both worlds.

No, I don’t think anyone should be able to jump in and out of the board at will; producers should sign a minimum one crop year contract with either the board or the private broker. That’s already standard procedure with open market commodities.
If indeed the CWB is as efficient and capable as some farmers have perceived, then it would be normal that sellers would eventually gravitate towards the board. I further believe that producers need to take control of their wheat board, and become responsible for the outcome of their decisions. That’s the rule the rest of the business world abides by. Ultimately, growing wheat is about supplying a customer’s demands, and not about politics or philosophy.
