MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Did you know cattle can detect smells from up to eight kilometres away? That’s just one of the interesting facts contained in a practical new book aimed at children and designed to tell the story of beef.Where Beef Comes From was written by Sherri Grant of Rockglen, Sask., and her daughter-in-law Avery Grant, from Aylesbury, Sask.Sherri Grant has been involved with the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association and the Agri-Ed Showcase at Canadian Western Agribition.Avery Grant said Sherri approached her, as a teacher, to help her brainstorm and put the text to her ideas.“It’s written at a Grade 2 reading level,” Avery said. “We field tested it with kids in Grade 6.”Draft versions also went to teachers to see if the book was appropriate. Copies will be available at the CCA semi-annual meeting and International Livestock Congress in Calgary in August.
