This week’s paper launches a brand new weekly section.
Nearly seven years ago, the Western Producer started publishing Farming magazine on a monthly basis to provide production-focused feature stories for western Canadian grain farmers.
Since then, Farming has evolved into a monthly section in the newspaper. Now, for a host of reasons, we’ve combined Farming with the Production section of the newspaper to create an expanded weekly version.
Our research has consistently shown that farmers in Western Canada want more stories on farm production topics – ideas that help you run your businesses more profitably and examples of how other farmers do things on their farms to function better.

Late season rainfall creates concern about Prairie crop quality
Praying for rain is being replaced with the hope that rain can stop for harvest. Rainfall in July and early August has been much greater than normal.
The tag line on Farming magazine was “Practical Production Information For Profitable Farming.” That was our original intention with the information presented in the magazine and that continues to be the focus of the stories we plan to write for you.
News often has a focus on problems. In the Production/Farming section, we will focus on solutions as well. With so many ingenious farmers in our coverage area, we like to show how you’ve found ways to save money, make extra money or farm more efficiently.
Stories in the new section will continue to deal with timely production news. They will also showcase production and business management topics of a less time-sensitive nature that can help improve the bottom line.
We’ll continue to bring you columnists that focus on specific topics related to production and farm operations. We’ll deliver series, or groups of stories, dealing with fertility, weeds and weed control, forages, salinity and other topics that can help you make production decisions.
We’ll scour the landscape for neat ideas, equipment modifications, farm-built machinery and other solutions to the day-to-day problems in your life. We’ll spend time with researchers, industry, extension staff, manufacturers and anyone else that will put up with us at field days, trade shows, conferences and meetings, to deliver the types of stories that can make a difference to your farming operation.
Our goal is to provide stories that you may not find in other agricultural publications, that might spark an idea or stimulate your thought process to make your farm a better place.
If you have ideas or story suggestions for the new Production/Farming section, we’re only a phone call away.
