ESN use increases, thanks to federal subsidy

WINNIPEG — Environmentally Smart Nitrogen has been around for about two decades. Twenty years is a long time, so it’s easy to forget why Canadian farmers initially bought and used the polymer-coated fertilizer. In the early 2000s, few people talked about greenhouse gas emissions from cropland, but farmers were concerned about something else. “Probably the […] Read more

In October, the final Manitoba Agriculture crop report for 2023 pegged the provincial canola average at 42 bushels per acre, but much higher yields have been reported from some parts of the province. | File photo

Man. canola yields thought to be record-setting

Results for 2023 not official yet, but anecdotal reports and gov’t estimates suggest average yield in high 40s is possible

WINNIPEG — The numbers are not official, but Manitoba farmers might set a new record for canola yields in 2023. The record for Manitoba was established in 2017, when the provincial average was 47 bushels per acre. That number comes from Yield Manitoba, a publication of the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corp., the provincial crop insurer. […] Read more

Liping Wang, a researcher at the University of Guelph, used gene editing and transgenic technology to create canola plants with corn genetics. The corn genes are changing how the canola makes starch, which in turn boosts yield. Greenhouse tests show that the canola plants can produce 50 percent more pods and 50 percent higher yields. | Diana Martin photo

Canola yields reach new heights

A canola innovation that could result in dramatic yield gain is getting closer to reality. Next spring, University of Guelph scientists plan to conduct field trials in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and possibly Montana on lines of transgenic canola that have produced 50 percent more pods and 50 percent higher seed yield in a greenhouse. “In the […] Read more

Wheat in the fast lane

Canada’s canola industry reached a milestone in the fall of 2005. From 1990 until 2004, canola yields across the Prairies were stuck in a range of 23 to 27 bushels per acre. Some producers were recording yields much higher than 25 bu. per acre, but the average yield in Canada was stagnant. Finally, in 2005, […] Read more
