Parasite study
Merck Agvet has recently released parasite control study results showing cattle treated with IVOMEC pour-on have greater average daily gain and more efficient feed conversion. The trial involved 6,883 mixed-bred yearlings at a commercial feedlot in Western Canada.
The animals were weighed on arrival and randomly divided into two groups. Fecal samples were taken from 10 percent of the animals in each group. One group was treated with IVOMEC pour-on, the other with topical fenthion, an organophosphate.
The IVOMEC animals showed average daily gain of 1.86 kilograms, or 0.063 kg more than the control animals. They did it on less feed, 6.17 pounds feed per pound gain versus 6.34 lbs. for the control group.

Cattle market on internet
There is a new way to promote and market cattle internationally: The internet.
Cattle Offerings Worldwide, or COW, is a computer database and web site with offices in Chapel Hill, N.C., and Purchase, N.Y.
Its internet address is www.cattleofferings.com.
The site was set up by Ben Zaitz, a third-generation family cattle producer, who likens it to multiple listing services used in the real estate industry.
The web site posts information from breed associations as well as from private breeders and embryo and semen companies.
When a seller posts semen, embryos or cattle for sale on the COW database, interested buyers are sent an e-mail, fax or mail notice. Buyers find contacts the same way. People don’t need a computer to use COW.
So far, most listings are American but there are about a dozen Canadian producers on the site and there are producers from Australia and New Zealand.
