Satellite service
A new satellite information service for farmers boasts easier access and lower monthly fees than existing services.
AgCast Canada provides farmers with markets and weather information and analysis similar to DTN and Global Link, but the service does not require a separate satellite dish for those who are already using a Star Choice Communications dish for their television.
AgCast is available as a pay service on Star Choice. It requires a computer with a Windows-compatible operating system. The computer should have at least 16 Mb of RAM, but 32 is preferred, said product manager Doug Maguire.
The AgCast starter kit includes the software needed to operate the service and a serial cable that links the computer to the Star Choice receiver.
AgCast delivers commodity prices, stock quotes, market commentaries, sports updates, agricultural news, and radar imagery weather reports and forecasts. The weather service allows customers to zoom in on a geographic area.
The satellite allows farmers to receive information without tying up a phone line with a modem.
If you’re away from home, you can also retrieve AgCast information from the internet, as long as you take the AgCast software. But at home, Maguire recommends using the satellite because it is faster and provides more information.
