Manitoba

Southwest

  • Cool temperatures have delayed seeding, with 90 percent now complete.
  • Early-seeded crops have emerged.
  • Pastures in good condition overall.
  • Moisture is adequate.
  • Flea beetles are feeding in warmer temperatures.

Southeast and Red River Valley

Central and Interlake

  • Seeding making good progress, but variable.
  • Fall-seeded crop condition declining, with half rated as fair to poor.
  • Winter cereals in poor condition and replacement is underway in many fields.
  • Pastures are generally good, but progressing slowly.
  • Alfalfa damage from frost.

Northwest

  • Seeding 90 percent complete
  • Canola seeding is proceeding quickly.
  • Some early-seeded crops have emerged, especially in western regions.
  • Fall-seeded crops rated as poor to fair, with some spring crop replacement underway.
  • Pastures progressing slowly due to cold.

Saskatchewan

Southwest

  • Seeding is nearly complete.
  • Pastures are behind, but improving.
  • Winter annuals are flowering. Early emerged crops are subject to some post-emergent weed control.
  • Gopher problems near Assiniboia and Swift Current.
  • Flea beetles and grasshoppers reported.
  • Sixty percent of cropland soils have sufficient moisture, with the remainder short.
  • Pastures are average to poor in the southwest.

Southeast

  • Crops are about 90 percent planted. Rain showers were intermittent, heavy in some areas south of Moose Jaw.
  • Early-seeded crops have emerged and some post-emergent weed control is underway.
  • Topsoil moisture is 90 percent adequate.
  • Some fall-seeded crops are being replaced after winter kill and frost damage. Some damage to early emerging canola.
  • Pastures are average to good.
  • Cutworms at control threshold levels found at Marquis. Flea beetles are feeding.

West-central

  • Seeding is 95 percent complete.
  • Some showers provided much needed moisture for germination.
  • Pulse rolling and limited post-emergent weed control underway.
  • Flea beetles, grasshoppers and gophers reported.

East-central

  • Seeding is 85 percent complete.
  • Colder than average temperatures are suppressing crop advancement. Winter wheat is at the six-leaf stage.
  • Some frost damage to alfalfa.
  • Soil moisture 90 percent adequate.
  • Hayland conditions good.
  • Flea beetles are present.

Northwest

  • Seeding is about 90 percent complete. Cropland moisture is 67 percent adequate.
  • Rain and snow fell in the region.
  • Early-seeded crops emerging.
  • Some canola planting is delayed.
  • Pasture conditions are slipping.
  • Fire bans in some drier municipalities.
  • Flea beetles are present.

Northeast

  • Seeding is about 95 percent complete, with 74 percent moisture being adequate and 24 short.
  • Weed and crop development very slow due to cold.
  • Cattle feeding is underway.

Alberta

South

  • Seeding nearing completion in most areas, with the southwest lagging due to rain and cold overnight temperatures.
  • High soil moisture levels have moderated in the area south of Taber.
  • Crops behind season average by 10 to 15 days due to cold conditions and late planting. Pastures 15 to 20 days behind normal.
  • Reseeding of crops to replace fall cereals lost to frost, winterkill and wind-eroded soils is completed.
  • Flea beetles are reported.
  • Winter annuals are flowering.
  • Post-emergent weed control underway.

Central

  • Seeding is 90 percent complete.
  • Poor subsoil moisture conditions remain a concern, with 24 percent very low, 36 fair, 37 good.
  • Fall-seeded crops are 85 percent good to fair and 11 percent poor. Some replacement of fall-seeded crops is underway after cold weather damage.
  • Cool, dry weather has suppressed pastures, with half in poor condition.
  • Flea beetles are reported.

Northwest

  • Most seeding finished.
  • Emergence remains poor due to cold temperatures. Frost damage to some emerged crops.
  • Surface moisture is highly variable.
  • Pastures are improved over last week.
  • Poor subsoil moisture in most areas.

Northeast

  • Seeding 90 percent complete, with soil moisture conditions declining due to lack of rain.
  • Fall-seeded crops remain in poor condition, with half showing significant winter damage.
  • Forage crops are 74 percent poor to fair.

Peace and B.C.

  • Cold temperatures hampering emergence.
  • Surface moisture is generally good, while subsoil moisture is poor to fair.
  • Seeding is 80 percent complete.
  • Replacement of frost-damaged spring and fall-seeded crops underway.
  • Pastures are 76 percent fair or better.
