Manitoba

Interlake/East

  • Precipitation ranged from 21 to 50 millimetres with cooler temperatures.
  • Water ponds forming in fields and limiting herbicide applications.
  • Crops are turning pale green in low lying areas in south.
  • Canola plant growth is highly variable and flax is displaying some chlorosis.
  • In east, winter wheat is good to excellent, with some reports of powdery mildew, septoria and tan spot.
  • Hay and pasture conditions are fair to good but improving.

South, Red River Valley

  • General rain and below normal temperatures were reported, with crops growing slowly.
  • Uneven germination reported in pulses and canola due to frost, wind and flea beetles.
  • The first cut of dairy quality alfalfa is underway.
  • Hay fields and pastures delayed.
  • Cutworm damage is reported.

West

  • In the south, seeding is complete, except for green feed.
  • Areas received rainfall of 40 mm on average. In the north, rain ranged from 10 to

30 mm.

  • Wheat is less advanced near The Pas.
  • Winter wheat and fall rye are in good to excellent shape.
  • Pastures are good to fair.

Saskatchewan

North

  • Blaine Lake, Prince Albert saw less rain than other areas.
  • Crops are progressing slowly with less moisture than other parts of province and cooler than normal spring weather.

Central

  • Crop emergence is variable.
  • Showers reported in several districts.
  • Cutworms are causing damage.

South

  • Heavy, spotty rain storms and hail reported, with up to 75 mm at Aneroid, Ponteix, Assiniboia and Estevan.
  • Crops are very good, with good moisture conditions.
  • Herbicide applications are delayed in wet fields.
  • Cutworms reported at Swift Current, Assiniboia and south of Regina.
  • Hay lands are average and showing little improvement while pastures are benefiting from moisture.

Alberta

Peace, Northeast

  • Crops are ahead of much of the province, but behind normal development for this time of year.
  • Moisture levels are adequate.
  • Flea beetles are reported.

Central

  • Dry conditions persist in eastern and east-central areas, particularly at Bonnyville.
  • Hailstorm damaged crops in a line from Gadsby to Donalda to Drumheller.

South

  • As much as 175 mm of rain has fallen in recent weeks, easing previously dry conditions in area.
  • Diseases and insect pressures have been contained in cooler temperatures, although cutworms are present in east.
  • Wet conditions are delaying herbicide applications.
  • Hay delayed by cool spring.
