A strike at Canada’s second largest grain company came a step closer to reality last week, as members of the Grain Services Union approved strike action against Agricore.

Members attending union meetings in Alberta and Manitoba last week rejected the company’s latest contract offer and voted 78 percent in favor of strike action.

GSU general secretary Hugh Wagner said the union will invite the company back to the bargaining table. Talks broke off Sept. 8, with both sides saying they are far apart on all major issues.

Agricore and the GSU are attempting to negotiate their first contract, replacing three existing agreements between the union and Alberta Wheat Pool and Manitoba Pool

Elevators.
