A Saskatchewan business has been honored for its success in the world of business exports.

Schulte Sales Ltd., of Englefeld, Sask., recently won the 1999 Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership exporter of the year award.

Schulte Sales has manufactured farm and industrial equipment for more than 75 years.

“It started out with blacksmithing, then an equipment dealership, and it’s just grown from there,” said president Jim Carnago.

Schulte has been exporting since 1967, he added. In 1998, 58 percent of total sales were exported to the United States, Australia, Costa Rica and Norway. Carnago credits exports for keeping the company vibrant through tough times in the domestic market.

“We keep looking over our shoulders, but things continue to go well,” he said.

Schulte is a vital employer in Englefeld, which has a population of slightly more than 300. In the last two years the company has boosted its workforce to 90 by creating 30 new jobs.

The company has developed a new product every year for seven years. The most recent is the F-10 Hydraulic swing rotary cutter.

This was the first such award given by STEP, and was awarded to the company that showed the greatest impact on community, job creation and innovation.

“It’s not about how large or small the company is,” said STEP president Anne Rose.

“It’s more about the impact the business has on the community, being involved as a community citizen.
