OTTAWA (Staff) — A three-member commission has been set up by the government to review pay and perks received by MPs.
By law, such a review must happen after every election.
Former Liberal small business minister Charles Lapointe will chair the commission, which also includes Queen’s University professor E.E.S. Franks and former Conservative MP Jean Piggott.
A report will be presented within six months and debated by Parliament.
The commission begins its work at a time when many MPs, led by the Reform Party, are challenging the perks MPs receive and when the government is promising to reduce the services or increase the user fees on such MPs’ services as haircuts, subsidized cafeteria meals and free travel.
