Chicken industry awards
The Saskatchewan Chicken Industry Development Fund presented awards worth $1,000 each to three University of Saskatchewan students who demonstrated a strong interest in the poultry industry. The recipients were Jennifer Koeman, Daniel Letourneau and Vanessa Martens.
Koeman, a fourth-year student at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, will graduate with a veterinary medicine degree this spring and will also be on the poultry diagnostic pathology and field service rotation.
Letourneau, a graduate of the diploma of agriculture program, recently transferred to the bachelor of science in agriculture program and is majoring in animal science.
Martens is in her first year of the agriculture degree program.

Banda re-elected
Dennis Banda has been re-elected president of the board of Federated Co-operatives Ltd.
Originally from Marcelin, Sask., Banda will occupy a full-time office at FCL’s headquarters in Saskatoon. He also represents 13 retail co-ops in northwestern Saskatchewan.
Other board members elected at FCL’s March 2 re-organization meeting were vice-chair Herb Carlson of Buchanan, Sask., regional chairs Barry Gosnell of the Winnipeg region, Laura Vance (Regina), Don Russell (Saskatoon), Russell Wolf (Calgary), Don Fluney (Edmonton) and Keith Corbould (British Columbia).
FCL provides wholesaling, manufacturing, marketing and administrative services to more than 300 retail co-ops in Western Canada. In 2003, it achieved record sales of $3.55 billion.
Provincial equine training
Olds College in Olds, Alta., will offer a certificate program for provincial equine instructors again this fall. The five-month program is designed for entry level instructors who do not require Equine Canada level 1 training. A committee is working to unite all provincial training programs in Canada under a single national instructor certification course. Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia are the only provinces that offer a provincial training program. For information, call 800-661-6537.
