Special land

Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow announced Feb. 19 two additions to the Saskatchewan Representative Areas Network: Wapawekka Hills and Seager Wheeler Lake. The two areas cover 606,958 acres of crown land.

Wapawekka Hills is located just south of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan and includes 167,321 acres of rugged terrain that supports a wide diversity of wildlife due to the variety of forest, waterways and vegetation it contains. The region also holds traditional cultural values for local Native people.

The Seager Wheeler Lake area is located just south of Deschambault Lake and encompasses 439,637 acres, which are virtually untouched by humans. The land is a mix of black spruce and tamarack forest, which provides ideal habitat for caribou. The area is also a breeding ground for great grey owls.

Hunting applications

Applications to take part in the draw for elk and moose hunting in Manitoba are available from the province’s natural resources department.

In most regions, the fall moose season opens Sept. 20 and the winter moose season Nov. 29.

As well, two new draw seasons for moose have been added: a fall rifle season in game hunting area 5 (northwest of The Pas) and a fall archery season in hunting areas 28, 31 and 31A (from the Carmen-Winkler area into southwestern Manitoba.)

The elk draw season remains the same as last year, except in Swan River Valley, where all regular elk draw seasons in hunting area 13 have been expanded to include the part of area 14 that lies outside the Swan-Pelican Provincial Forest.

Applications must be received no later than 4:30 p.m. April 1. They can be mailed or dropped off at Manitoba Natural Resources, Box 66, 200 Saulteaux Cres., Winnipeg, Man., R3J 3W3.
