MANITOBA

Eastern

  • Corn, sunflowers, soybeans and some flax remain in fields in below average condition.
  • Wheat yields ranged from 15-25 bushels per acre, with average bushel weight and protein and high dockage.

Interlake

  • Harvest is nearing completion.
  • Yields of cereals and flax remain disappointing.
  • Desiccated flax is running eight to 10 bu.

Central

Southwest

  • North of the Trans-Canada Highway, wheat, barley and canola are 85-90 percent swathed and 55 percent, 60 percent and 35 percent combined respectively.
  • Yields are variable with wheat at 25-50 bu., barley 35-70 bu. and canola 25-40 bu.
  • South of the Trans-Canada, only flax, corn and sunflowers remain.
  • Yields of wheat are at 25-40 bu., and canola ranged from five to 50 bu., with an average of 25-30 bu.
  • Dry soils have delayed winter wheat seeding.

Northwest

  • Harvest has progressed, with wheat and barley 80 percent combined and canola 50 percent.
  • Yields for wheat ranged from 35-55 bu., barley 30-80 bu., oats 65-85 bu., peas 25-55 bu., lentils 1,000 pounds and canola three to 40 bu.

SASKATCHEWAN

Northeast

  • There is lodging and deteriorating quality due to sprouting and bleaching.
  • Only about 10 percent has been harvested.
  • The most advanced crops are peas at 48 percent, lentils at 23 percent and barley at 15 percent.

Northwest

  • Lodging, sprouting, powdery mildew and mould reported.
  • Pastures are excellent.

East-central

  • Heavy rains combined with hail along the Yellowhead Highway and north resulted in considerable yield and quality loss.
  • Nearly all of the cereals and canola have been swathed.
  • In the Yorkton area, harvesting ranges from zero to 40 percent for wheat, 45-100 percent for barley, 50 percent for peas and zero to 30 percent for canola.
  • Yields are variable depending on earlier waterlogging.
  • Wheat ranges from 35-80 bu., barley 60-90 bu., canola 22-55 bu. and peas 30-40 bu.
  • Pastures are in excellent shape.

West-central

  • Wet conditions have resulted in lodging, bleaching, sprouting and lighter bushel weights.
  • Some progress was made in combining, with wheat at 12 percent, barley at 25, canola at 15, lentils at 60 and peas at 75 percent.

Southeast

  • Wet conditions have caused shattering, lodging, staining, sprouting and bleaching.
  • Combining of wheat is at 45 percent; lentils 80 percent; peas 95 percent; barley 70 percent and canola 60 percent.
  • North of Regina, approximately 75 percent of fields are harvested.
  • Yields are average to slightly above average, with wheat at 40-50 bu., barley 60-70 bu., canola 25-30 bu., peas 20-45 bu. and lentils 1,800-2,000 lb. an acre.
  • Sawfly damage is severe and widespread.

ALBERTA

Peace

  • Some heavy frosts were reported through the region.
  • Wheat is grading No. 2 and 3 due to frost damage.
  • Swathing of most crops complete.
  • Combining has been delayed although half of the harvesting has been done in the far north.
  • Yields to date are good, with canola in the 30-50 bu. range, barley 80-100 bu. and wheat 50 to 80 bu.

Northwest-Northeast

  • Crop yield potential is still very good to excellent, but little is binned.
  • Lodging, sprouting, staining and mould are a concern for cereals.

Central

  • Grain quality is a concern with lodging, sprouting, staining and moulds.
  • Combining is most advanced for cereals in the east, with about 40 percent done.
  • Pasture conditions are very good but growth has slowed.

Southern

  • Yields are above average east of Calgary, with wheat running 60-90 bu. and barley 80-120 bu.
  • Peas are finished with an average yield of 50 bu.
  • Canola swathing is complete and yielding as high as 45 bu.
  • There is concern about sprouting in cereal swaths.
  • Wheat that was combined in southern areas was grading No. 2 or 3, with low protein.
  • Cereals and dry beans still in the field are deteriorating in quality.
  • There is much swathed alfalfa still in the field.
