Cows compete for Jerseyof the Year
Three nominees were selected to compete for the 2015 Canadian Jersey Cow of the Year:
- Fermar Paramount JoyBreeder of Ferme Fermar Inc. in Quebec, owned by Nic, Jeni, Ben and Andy Sauder of Illinois.
- Lone Pine Giller Donna, owned by Lone Pine Jerseys in Alberta.
- Rosalea Jed’s CybilBreeder, owned by John Nixon of Rosalea Jerseys in Ontario.
The nominees are Canadian born purebred Jerseys who showcase longevity, production, genetic merit and strength of pedigree.

National nutrientstewardship survey
Fertilizer Canada and Farm Management Canada are continuing the National 4R Nutrient Stewardship program until Nov. 1.
It’s an online survey that explores nutrient stewardship practices on Canadian farms and the tools and information required to raise awareness of stewardship practices.
The findings will provide further insight into current practices and opportunities to improve the program and maximize 4R adoption on farms.

October Is agriculture month in Sask.
Saskatchewan agriculture minister Lyle Stewart has proclaimed October Agriculture Month.
This year’s theme is Stewards in Sustainability, which highlights the commitment of farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses to maintaining and improving the environment.
The provincial ministry willfocus on a different subthemeeach week:
- husbandry and habitat: Oct. 4-10
- soil: Oct. 11-17
- water: Oct. 18-24
- air: Oct. 25-31
Profiles of experts such as an agricultural engineer and a watershed technician will showcase how the industry makes sustainability a priority. Their stories will be posted at www.saskatchewan.ca/thinkag.
Key advancements in sustain-ability over the past century will also be presented as an animated timeline.

Food centre receives funding
Saskatchewan Pulse Growers is contributing $750,000 to help expand the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre’s ability to support pulse food product development at a rate consistent with industry demand.
The funding will build a new operational facility, the Agri-Food Innovation Centre, which is more than three times the size of the present facility.
The centre will work with food and ingredient companies to develop and launch new products.
