Alta. feed mill destroyed
NOBLEFORD, Alta. – Explosions destroyed a feed mill near Nobleford July 20.
Outlook Pork must now find feed for about 2,500 breeding sows on four southern Alberta farms.
Two of the mill’s workers were taken to hospital in Lethbridge as a precaution. Both are termed as OK.
Mill manager Gerrit Beekman said there is no indication of what caused the fire or the explosions. The company is not discussing the financial cost.
The mill had significant stocks of canola oil and lard in barrels, and more barrels exploded as the fire intensified.
Outlook Pork’s farrowing operations and other hog feeding operations will have to rely on custom feed stocks.
The company said about 35 jobs in those barns are secure.
