Pulse innovator award nominees sought
Nominations will be accepted until Dec. 6 for the 2023 Alberta Pulse Industry Innovator Award.
An industry innovator is a person or organization that has contributed to the success of the pulse industry through various areas, from production, marketing, research, extension and processing to management, promotion and innovation.

The original 1,500 acres of mostly cultivated land has expanded and transitioned into a progressive commercial cattle operation, sourcing genetics and seedstock from producers who prioritized environmental stewardship within their own farms and ranches.
A cow herd was started in 2013, which now includes year-round grazing while preserving more than 320 acres of original native grassland.
U OF L scholarship available
Western Grains Research Foundation is sponsoring a $15,000 graduate scholarship at the University of Lethbridge.
The annual award is available to students pursuing a Master of Science in any of WGRF’s priority research areas.
The scholarship will specifically support students who are studying in U of L agricultural biotechnology and agricultural graduate programs.
These programs contribute to research with a direct impact on local agricultural practices, building on strong ties with institutions such as Agriculture Canada, as well as local community and industry groups.
WGRF funds a broad range of research in variety development and crop production in 15 different western Canadian field crops.
Since 2011, WGRF has invested more than $1 million in more than 22 graduate student scholarships at the universities of Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
BASF donates toSTARS fleet
BASF Canada Agricultural Solutions is donating $500,000 over three years to help STARS renew its aging helicopter fleet.
The new helicopters will help STARS deliver vital care to patients across the Prairies and parts of British Columbia for the next 30 years or more.
The donation will be used by STARS for mission operations as well as to help buy medically equipped Airbus H145 helicopters at a cost of $13 million each.
STARS has been flying missions in the new Airbus H145 helicopters since mid-2019 due to government, community and corporate support through an ambitious capital campaign.
The remainder of the new fleet is being implemented at all six of its bases this year.
CWD research funded
Alberta Innovates plans to invest $1 million in new funding for the chronic wasting disease research program.
Collaborative research projects will investigate the brain disease in deer, elk and other cervids.
Successful projects will be funded to a maximum of $250,000 and will:
- provide a better understanding of the mechanism and transmission of CWD
- minimize disease risks through the development of innovative approaches that contribute to the diagnosis, prevention, cure and possible elimination of the disease
- identify the broader societal and economic impact of CWD in Alberta
- provide information at all levels of government for the development of public policies regarding CWD
