HOGS

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was unavailable July 8 and July 1.

U.S. hogs averaged $118.72 on a carcass basis July 8, up from $114.22 July 1.

The U.S. pork cutout was $114.67 per hundredweight July 8, up from $108.75 July 1.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to July 9 was 1.983 million, down from 2.281 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 1.916 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the July 9 Signature Four price was C$248.73 per 100 kilograms, up from $247.79.

Canada-U.S. trade relationship called complex

Trade issues existed long before U.S. president Donald Trump and his on-again, off-again tariffs came along, said panelists at a policy summit last month.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $246.73, up from $245.49, HyLife was up to $263.86 from $262.89 the previous week, and OlyWest was $254.80, down from $258.70. OlyWest 2021 was down to $250.90 from $255.50, and HyLife’s adjusted price was up to $263.76 from $260.47.

BISON

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4.25-$4.40 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $4.25 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.50-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.75-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.50-$3.75. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

LAMBS

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 3,507 sheep and 127 goats sold July 4.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 811 sheep and 177 goats sold July 4.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$242 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $190-$235, 70-85 lb. were $200-$248, 86-105 lb. were $200-$252 and 106 lb. and heavier were $200-$255. Wool rams were $123-$153 per cwt. Cull ewes were $85-$185.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $150-$200 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $180-$220, 70-85 lb. were $190-$240, 86-105 lb. were $190-$255 and 106 lb. and heavier were $180-$210. Hair rams were $160-$220 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$145.
