Cash hogs unchanged
U.S. cash hog prices were mostly steady last week, although hog futures were under pressure from expectations of increasing market-ready supply.
The partial shutdown of the U.S. government stopped production of several U.S. Department of Agriculture livestock market reports. It forced the Chicago Mercantile Exchange to put forward a controversial plan to settle the October contract when it ended Oct. 14 using futures price movement.
Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered to packing plants were steady at $67-$68 US per hundredweight Oct. 11, compared to $67.50 Oct. 4. The U.S. pork cut-out and weekly slaughter numbers are not available because of the U.S. government shutdown.

Bison steady
The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range averaged $3.50 Cdn per pound hot hanging weight with sales to $3.70. Grade A heifers sold at $3.45 with sales to $3.55.
Animals older than 30 months and those outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.
Festival supports lamb
Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 1,451 sheep and 621 goats sold Oct. 7.
Wool lambs lighter than 70 lb. were $118-$138 per cwt., 70-85 lb. were $128-$136, 86-105 lb. were $127-$136 and 106 lb. and heavier were $121-$137.
Wool rams were $50-$76 per cwt. Cull ewes were $30-$65.
Hair lambs lighter than 70 lb. were $120-$139 per cwt., 70-85 lb. were $122-$130, 86-105 lb. were $122-$130 and 106 lb. and heavier were $121-$126.
Hair rams were $40-$55 per cwt. Cull ewes were $25-$70.
Good kid goats lighter than 50 lb. were $170-$225. Those heavier than 50 lb. were $170-$240 per cwt. Nannies were $60-$95 per cwt. Billies were $117.50-$155.
Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 3,486 sheep and lambs and 328 goats traded Oct. 7. All classes of good lambs sold actively at higher prices because of the Muslim Enid festival.
Sheep opened steady and closed higher. Goats sold steady.
