PULSES: Pidgeon Peas Soar To New Heights In India

Winnipeg, Nov 23. – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday morning, November 23.

– According to India’s farm ministry, pulse planting is down 9% in the country. Plantings mostly began in October and should be ready for harvest sometime in the New Year. A lack of soil moisture is being held up as one of the reasons behind the shortfall.

– Pidgeon pea prices are skyrocketing in India. According to an official with the Indian Merchant Chamber, the cost of a kilogram of Pidgeon peas has risen to 200 rupees. To put that in perspective, a dozen eggs costs just 60 rupees.

– This season’s estimated lentil crop in Australia has been pegged at 270,000 tonnes, down from an earlier estimate. The 2015/16 prediction comes from Pulse Australia.

– Red lentils on the Canadian Prairies are topping out at 50 cents per pound, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Large green lentils are topping out at 53 cents per pound while smaller varieties are in the 44 cents area.
