Global Markets: Fed chair Powell to deliver speech

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– U.S. Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell will deliver a speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo. on Friday, with many observers believing he will keep benchmark interest rates at high levels for longer than expected. However, Powell has not indicated if rates are going to rise. Inflation in the U.S. has come down from 9.1 per cent in June 2022 to 3.2 per cent today.

– Officials in the Northwest Territories continued to tell Yellowknife and area residents not to return to their homes, one week after a wildfire threatened the city. While firefighters have been successful at keeping the fire at bay, RCMP officers have set up checkpoints to turn away people wanting to return home. Meanwhile, residents of Jean Marie River, a hamlet of 63 people northwest of Hay River, have been allowed to return.

– Canada named Natalka Cmoc as the country’s newest ambassador to Ukraine on Thursday. Cmoc, who speaks Ukrainian, is a public servant with experience working at the Canadian Embassy of Ukraine. She also helped implement security programming in the country after it was invaded by Russia in 2014 and later helped monitor Ukraine’s 2015 elections. Cmoc replaces Larisa Galadza, who announced earlier this month she was stepping down after four years on the job.

– Former United States president Donald Trump was booked in a Fulton County sheriff’s office in Atlanta on Thursday after he surrendered on charges he tried to overthrow the 2020 presidential election. Trump arrived in Atlanta at approximately 6 p.m. CDT and was driven to the police station, where he was processed for 20 minutes and had his mugshot taken, which was widely distributed on social media. He was released on US$200,000 bond and took a return flight home to New Jersey.
