- Statistics Canada reported on Friday that the country’s population reached 40 million. The federal agency said Canada experienced record population growth in 2022 of about 1.05 million people, which marking the first time it exceeded the one million in a single year. As well, population growth hit 2.7 per cent, for the highest rate since 1957 when it was 3.3 per cent. On the current pace, Canada’s population would reach 50 million by 2043.

- StatCan also reported on Friday that wholesale trade (excluding petroleum, petroleum products and other hydrocarbons excluding oilseeds and grain) in April fell 1.4 per cent from March at C$80.9 billion. The agency said sales were down in four of the seven subsectors, including miscellaneous (down 8.8 per cent) and the food, beverage and tobacco products (down two percent). However, from April to April the wholesale trade was up 1.4 per cent.
- United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken is headed to China to meet with Foreign Minister Qin Gang during the weekend and possibly President Xi Jinping. Relations between the U.S. and China, the world’s two largest economies, are at a decades-old low point. While little progress in reducing tensions is expected, the bilateral meetings are said to show both countries are still willing to talk. Also, on Friday Microsoft founder Bill Gates met with President Xi as part of his work with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
- Seven African leaders met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday and are scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday. The leaders of Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia are on a peace mission, hoping to make some headway in resolving the conflict. The war has greatly impeded grain imports to Africa, which has led to increased food insecurity.
