Feed Grains: U.S. barley crop down 29% on the year

WINNIPEG, Sept. 29 (CNS Canada) – US barley production in 2017 is estimated at 142 million bushels, according to the USDA’s small grains report, released September 29. That was well below the 200 million bushels grown the previous year, with average yields dropping by 5.3 bushels per acre, to 72.6 bu/ac. Harvested area was also down on the year.

The U.S. oats crop was pegged at 49.4 million bushels in the report, down by 24 per cent from 2016.

Ukrainian farmers are nearing the halfway point seeding their winter cereal crops, according to a report from UkrAgroConsult. About 3.2 million hectares of winter wheat, triticale, and barley were seeded as of September 28, or about 44 per cent of intended area.

Corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade posted small gains on Friday, as the USDA’s quarterly stocks report showed slightly tighter than expected corn supplies in the country. The USDA pegged U.S. corn stocks, as of September 1, at 2.23 billion bushels.

Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta lost about C$5 per tonne over the past week, with prices ranging from C$190 to C$205 per tonne as of September 22, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Feed wheat prices held steady, ranging from C$208 to C$225 per tonne in Lethbridge.
