Canadian Financial Close: Tariff hikes ripple through markets

By MarketsFarm

WINNIPEG, May 13 (MarketsFarm) – The Canadian dollar was lower at market close on Monday, amid global turmoil as the United States/China trade war heated up.

The dollar finished Monday at US$0.7431 or US$1=C$1.3457, which compares with Friday’s close of US$0.7453 or C$1.3418.

The North American stock markets took a tumble on Monday, resulting in some of the largest losses so far in 2019.

China retaliated against the U.S. in the economic superpowers’ trade war. China announced tariffs on US$60 billion of U.S. imports of five to 25 per cent, effective June 1. This was in response to the U.S. hiking tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese imports from 10 to 25 per cent on May 10, and possibly imposing new tariffs on Chinese goods currently exempt. Trump stated he would meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next month at the G20 Summit in Japan to discuss trade.
