Falling pork plant profit margins in the United States, the temporary closure of a large slaughter plant and a good supply of market ready hogs cooled the hog market.

The Tyson plant in Indiana with a 15,000 head a day capacity that was damaged by fire was to reopen March 15. Pork prices were off the highs set the previous week.

Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs delivered to plants were $53 US per hundredweight, steady with March 5.

The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value fell to $73.83 March 12 from $75.71 March 5.

U.S. federal slaughter to March 13 was estimated at 2.13 million, down from 2.16 million the previous week.

The Canadian Bison Association said grade A youthful bulls younger than 30 months in the desirable weight range were as high as $2.60 per pound hot hanging weight.

Grade A youthful heifers younger than 30 months in the desirable weight range sold up to $2.45.

Carcasses outside the desired weight ranges were discounted by 15 to 25 cents per lb.

Calves were about $1.30 per lb. Slaughter cows and bulls sold at $1.50 hot hanging weight.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 439 sheep and 176 goats traded March 8. Sheep were steady. Bred ewes, goats and butcher goats were higher.

Lambs lighter than 70 lb. were $165-$187 per cwt. Lambs 75-85 lb. were $158-$172, 86-105 lb. were $135-$161 and those heavier than 105 lb. were $120-$159.

Rams were $72-$89 per cwt. Cull ewes were $70-$83. Bred ewes were $89-$131.

Good kid goats heavier than 50 lb. were $165-$227 per cwt. Nannies were $65-$180 per cwt. Mature billies were $100-$150.

Ontario Stockyards sold 1,311 sheep and lambs and 147 goats March 8.

Goats, sheep and all light lambs sold at steady prices.

Heavy lambs were barely steady to slightly lower.
