Supporting rural youth has become a major component of the Calgary Stampede held July 3-12.
This year the open steer show was changed to a junior competition with 60 contestants from the four western provinces and an entry from Kansas.
The grand champion steer and winner of $15,000 in scholarships and cash was Katie Serhienko of Maymont, Sask. Reserve went to Shilo Schaake of Kansas. He won $9,000.
In conjunction with the Olds Agricultural Society, the Stampede works together on a large youth show called Summer Synergy, where more than 300 youngsters between the ages of nine and 21 competed for about $70,000 in scholarships and other prizes.

At the end of the week long event, supreme champions from beef, dairy, sheep and equine were named:
Purebred beef: Dakota Townsend, Sylvan Lake, Alta.
Commercial beef: Cole McMahon, Galahad, Alta.
Dairy: Tyson Rietveld, Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.
Sheep: Shannon McLaughlin, Whitecourt, Alta.
Equine: Kaitlin Malterer, Ponoka, Alta.
At the 4-H provincial beef heifer shows, McMahon won the commercial beef section while Keely Adams of Forestburg won the purebred division with a red Angus heifer.
