Wild boar producers were reminded this week that their animals will be subject to traceability requirements as of July 1. Domestic pig producers have been subject to mandatory traceability since July 1, 2014.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for enforcing traceability requirements, and failure to meet those requirements could result in warnings, fines or prosecution.

Hog producers, auction markets, haulers and others in the chain must identify, keep records and record the movement of pigs under their care, the CFIA said in a March 9 news release.

An industry led initiative called PigTrace, organized by the Canadian Pork Council, had developed a national hog identification and traceability system for pigs from birth to slaughter.
