Canadian Herefords win in Denver

DENVER, Colo. – Canadian Hereford breeders celebrated yesterday after two Alberta producers won reserve grand champion bull and senior champion bull banners at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado.

Grant and Annette Hirsche of High River and their partners, Mike and Debbie Trefiak of Edgerton, were awarded Horned Hereford reserve grand champion honours for a nine-month-old bull calf named GH Adams Nitro Design ET 377X. This is the first big win for the Hirsches at the prestigious international show in more than 10 years.

The senior champion Polled Hereford banner went to the partnership of Brost Bros. of Irvine, Alta., Howard Crittendon of Imperial, Sask. and Gary and Norma Jean Boose of Nobleton, Ont.

Ian Harvie of Olds, Alta., won the reserve polled junior bull calf award.

The female show will be held tomorrow.

Canadians showing Red Angus cattle also wowed the crowds.

Howard and Wendy Schneider of Northline Angus near Ardrossan, Alta., won the grand champion banner for the second year running. They also won the spring bull calf championship and had the reserve champion intermediate bull.

Sixx Mile Angus owned by Clay and Corrine Gibson of Fir Mountain, Sask., had the reserve junior heifer champion.

At the Black Angus show, Rob and Gail Hamilton won the reserve senior champion bull banner.

The Black Angus female show is today.

At the beginning of the show, Vern and Eileen Davidson won the reserve grand champion Gelbvieh bull award.
