HOG PRICES FALL

Falling pork prices and negative packer margins pressured U.S. cash hog prices lower.

Hog futures saw the biggest one-week percentage decline in more than a year as meat prices fell from high levels that had hurt demand.

Cool weather has also delayed the start of barbecue season.

Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs delivered to plants were $67.50 US per cwt. April 29, down from $69 April 21.

The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value fell as low as $91.76 during the week, but recovered to $93.31 April 29, down from $95.06 April 21.

The U.S. federal slaughter estimate was 1.95 million head to April 29, down from 2.06 million in the same period the previous week.

BISON STEADY

The Canadian Bison Association said grade A bulls in the desirable weight range were $3.75-$3.85 Cdn per pound hot hanging weight.

Grade A heifers were $3.70-$3.80. Animals older than 30 months and those outside the desirable weight range may be discounted.

Slaughter cows and bulls averaged $2.70 with sales to $2.90.

Feeder calves were $2.25-$2.60 per lb. live and yearlings were $2-$2.60.

LAMB PRICES RISE

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 427 sheep and lambs and 44 goats traded April 25.

The light offering of sheep and lambs sold at much higher prices. Goats sold steady.
