HALIFAX – A Canadian Wheat Board director says the board has struggled with how to show the benefit the board’s single desk brings farmers through premium sales in international markets.
Kyle Korneychuck, District 7 director from northeast Saskatchewan and single desk supporter, said during a panel discussion at the Canadian Federation of Agriculture semi-annual meeting July 28 the board has discussed how to make sales numbers public in a way that would not violate commercial confidentiality.
“It’s a difficult argument for me to say to a farmer that I represent you, but I can’t tell you what I know,” he said. “You have to trust me.”

Going beyond “Resistant” on crop seed labels
Variety resistance is getting more specific on crop disease pathogens, but that information must be conveyed in a way that actually helps producers make rotation decisions.
In a later interview, he said he would like to see some way to get that information to producers but it could not reveal trade secrets.
He said one possibility would be to release some information after the fact when current market negotiations would not be jeopardized.
Korneychuck said the board keeps a “black book” with confidential information about CWB sales but to release the information would give market competitors a negotiating advantage.
