MANITOBA

Interlake, East

Central, Red River Valley

  • Harvest is underway on fall rye and winter wheat, with good to excellent yields reported.
  • Swathing is reported in oats and canola.
  • Soybeans and edible beans continue to flower and pod.
  • Corn is delayed.
  • Sprays have been applied to sunflowers for lygus bugs and sunflower beetles.
  • Second cut hay harvest continues.

West

  • In the south, the winter cereal and pea harvests are underway.
  • Good yields are reported south of Trans-Canada Highway.
  • Fusarium is affecting all varieties north of the Trans-Canada, with wheat midge also present.
  • Pastures are in good shape.
  • In the north, hot, dry weather allowed producers to make good harvest progress.
  • Most hay is weathered and overmature, with variable yields.

SASKATCHEWAN

Central

  • Field colour is changing.
  • Standing water observed at Wynyard from recent rains.
  • Crop staging is highly variable, raising concerns regarding early swathing and possible green seed counts.
  • Hot weather has helped with lentil drydown, especially welcomed by producers facing desiccant shortages.

North

  • Harvest is least advanced here, with many green fields still standing in north and east.
  • Bertha armyworms are reported east and north of Prince Albert.

South

  • Harvest, swathing and silage operations are evident along the Trans-Canada Highway east of Regina.
  • High heat has hastened ripening.
  • Lentils and peas are being combined and barley is being swathed in the south and east, with swathing of canola in west-central and southern areas.
  • Wheat is being swathed rather than straight cut at Assiniboia to battle a sawfly outbreak.
  • Bertha armyworms are reported north and east of Regina.
  • Peas are yielding 20 to 40 bu. an acre, with lentils yielding lower numbers.

ALBERTA

Peace, Northeast

  • Several municipal districts have been declared disaster areas because of extremely dry conditions.
  • Grimshaw, Grande Prairie and the Fort St. John, B.C., areas are extremely dry.
  • Heat extremes in the mid 30s C brought on crops prematurely.
  • Swathing of peas and some wheat is underway at Grimshaw.
  • Fort Vermilion and Manning report fair to good moisture conditions.
  • Rains at Barrhead and Westlock will help second cut hay crops.

Central

  • Silage operations are in full swing across much of the area.
  • Canola is being swathed, with barley harvest underway at Alliance. Pea harvest is underway near Galahad.
  • Some wheat is burning up in the heat.
  • Winter wheat and fall rye harvests have started.
  • Canola and peas are being swathed in north-central and central regions.
  • Second cut hay is poor due to declining soil moisture.
  • Drier conditions seen toward Saskatchewan border, with reports of grasshoppers in east-central districts.
  • Recent rains around Edmonton are helping the second crop of hay.

South

  • Mild weather created good growing and ripening conditions for crops.
  • Crops are furthest along in south, with combining started on winter wheat, fall rye and peas.
  • Crops are generally a week behind normal development for this time of year.
  • Lygus bugs are reported in alfalfa.
