Seed company reaches naming agreement
K3 Seeds has agreed to a five-year naming commitment for a meeting suite within the new Agri-food Hub & Trade Centre in Lethbridge.
The Picture Butte, Alta., company, a venture of Kolk Farms, is a certified seed retailer that offers a wide selection of wheat, barley, rye and canola.
The K3 Seeds Meeting Suite is one of four 1,000 sq. foot suites within the MNP Meeting Centre and is designed to be a flexible space ideal for small meetings, breakout space and training sessions.

Award honours former CCA president
Carling Matejka of Ponoka, Alta., is the first recipient of the Canadian Cattle Foundation’s Reg Schellenberg Next Generation Legacy Award to support the Canadian Cattle Young Leaders Program.
The award recognizes individuals who embody the spirit of leadership, mentorship, collaboration and dedication to the Canadian cattle industry.
It will include a belt buckle donated by the Schellenberg family ranch, Perrin Ranching 1990 Ltd., and a travel bursary to attend the 2024 Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference.
Schellenberg, president of the Canadian Cattle Association, died suddenly in December 2022, and in lieu of flowers, his family requested that donations be made through the foundation to support the CYL program.
The Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference has generously donated $10,000 to the Reg Schellenberg Legacy Fund to support the award.

New member joins smart farm network
Discovery Farm Woodstock has joined the Pan-Canadian Smart Farm Network.
This addition to the network brings total membership to eight smart farms across four provinces.
The network, led by the Olds College of Agriculture and Technology in Olds, Alta., fosters collaboration among researchers, producers, industry partners and other stakeholders to drive innovative projects that address critical issues in ag tech development and adoption.
Discovery Farm Woodstock, owned by Glacier FarmMedia, is a 330-acre site in Ontario that showcases innovative technology and equipment. It has access to experts and industry partners including the University of Guelph’s research services team.
Demonstration research at the Discovery Farm involves practical application and testing of various farming methods, technologies and practices in a real-world setting to provide farmers and agricultural professionals with tangible, applicable knowledge for their own operations.
ASF preparations receive funding
The Manitoba Pork Council has received $944,340 in federal funding through the African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program to help Canada’s pork industry prepare for the possibility of African swine fever entering the country.
The council will use the funding for projects that aim to enhance efforts to control wild pigs in the province, develop an integrated response plan that focuses on animal welfare, disease response and sector recovery, and encourage the adoption of best management practices to improve biosecurity measures through targeted awareness campaigns.
Climate change work funded in B.C.
The first round of applications is now open to farmers and ranchers in British Columbia for funding from the provincial and federal governments through the Beneficial Management Practices program to better prepare for and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The program will make $4 million available to fund projects that improve:
- waste management
- air quality control
- emissions control
- soil and riparian integrity
- water quality
- environmental impacts
Nufarm, college partner on ag tech
Olds College of Agriculture & Technology and Nufarm Agriculture Inc. have signed an official agreement to collaborate in the research, development and testing of agriculture technologies and products at the Olds College Smart Farm.
The partnership marks the first Nufarm technology development station established in Canada.
It establishes a strategic framework for the development and testing of agriculture technologies, plot trials of chemistry and biological technologies, agronomic training and applied research projects related to smart agricultural technology.
The partnership will include the development of services and products specifically designed for the growing conditions in Western Canada through the integration of Olds College’s Smart Ag Ecosystem with Nufarm’s accelerators.
B.C. ranch receives century award
The Bouffioux family of Fort St. John, B.C., has received a Century Farm Award, recognizing its contribution and dedication to agriculture in British Columbia since 1916.
The family-run XY Ranch, named for the XY cattle brand of the time, has won multiple awards for quality, including Best in B.C. at the AgAware B.C. competition and others, such as the British Columbia Agricultural Council, Canadian Western Agribition Bison Show and Wildrose Bison Show.
