Global Markets: Turkey in grain talks with Russia and Ukraine

WINNIPEG, May 26 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Turkey is reportedly in talks with Russia and Ukraine to mediate a solution to allowing grain exports from Ukrainian ports. A corridor of safe-passage through the Black Sea to the Bosphorus straight in Istanbul would allow grain to move once again after three months of disruptions due to the Russian invasion.

– Retail sales in Canada were up in 10 of 11 subsectors in March but declines in motor vehicle and parts dealers left total sales unchanged on the month at C$60.1 billion, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline stations and motor vehicle and parts dealers were up by 1.5 per cent in March.

– The United States has confiscated a cargo of Iranian oil being held on a Russian-operated ship near Greece and will reportedly transfer the cargo to another vessel before shipping it to the U.S, according to reports. The ship was impounded by Greek authorities last month due to sanctions against Russia.
