WINNIPEG, October 6 – The Canadian dollar held steady against
its US counterpart Tuesday as Statistics Canada released a report
on the country’s international merchandise trade.
At 8:40 a.m. CDT the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7641 or
C$1.3087, unchanged from Monday’s North American close.
Canada’s total exports declined 3.6 per cent in August while
imports edged up 0.2 per cent, Statistics Canada said in a report
on Tuesday.
As a result, Canada’s merchandise trade deficit with the world
widened from C$817 million in July to C$2.5 billion in August,
StatsCan said.
The TSX was stronger in early activity, up 54.06 points at 8:40
a.m. CDT to sit at 13,606.26.
