MANITOBA

Southeast

  • Cold, wet soil has delayed germination and plant development. Emergence is variable in all seeded crops, with 70 percent of seeding complete.
  • Reduced seedling vigour is being encountered as young plants fail to grow rapidly. They are stressed in the cold soil and moisture is providing significant disease opportunities.
  • Corn and soybean seeding has progressed little from last week’s 50 percent rate. Crop substitutions are being made in favour of shorter-season crops.

Central

Interlake

  • Wet conditions in all but the northwest area are slowing progress.
  • Frost has damaged early-seeded, early-emerged crops in southern Interlake and some reseeding is taking place.
  • Some broadcast canola seeding followed by harrowing is taking place with limited success. Canola is 30 percent seeded.

Southwest

  • Seeding nearly complete with some spraying under way.
  • Wheat in the two and three leaf stages is common.
  • Canola frost damage in some areas. Most canola in good condition, but slowed by the cold.
  • Pastures and forage perennials late and in seasonally poor condition.

Northwest

  • Most of the crop in the ground with 30 percent of canola emerged.
  • Frost in many areas, but damage is limited.
  • Weed spraying is under way south of Neepawa.
  • Slow pasture and crop progress.

SASKATCHEWAN

Northeast

  • Wheat has emerged with some canola making an appearance. Fifty percent of these crops are seeded.
  • Pulse and flax crops seeding nearly complete.
  • Rain improved otherwise dry conditions; there is poor subsoil moisture support for plants.
  • Warmer soil than in other eastern regions has pushed weed development.
  • Poor pasture conditions caused by dry and cold weather.

Southeast

  • Good seeding progress after a slow start. Most pulses seeded; 50 percent of wheat, canola and flax.
  • Moisture conditions are average to poor and drying rapidly.
  • Frozen cereals are recovering quickly.

Southwest

  • Rain fell east of Gravelbourg, north through the Regina plains and to Saskatoon and west through Alberta.
  • Seeding nearly complete in most crops in most areas.
  • Cereals planted early in two and three leaf stages; weed scouting under way.
  • Pasture and forages in poor condition for the date, resulting in later livestock turnouts.

Central and northwest

  • Seeding 75 percent complete with some reseeding of early emerged canola that was damaged by frost.
  • Pastures poor.

ALBERTA

South

  • Seeding complete in nearly all areas, with emergence widespread.
  • Weed spraying under way in most cereal crops.
  • Winter wheat damage caused by brown wheat mites is resulting in insecticide applications. Scouting under way for the mites, cinch bugs, Russian wheat aphids, wire and cutworms.
  • Some frost damage to canola.
  • Pasture in poor condition for the time of year, but progressing.
  • Sugar beet crops that were damaged by frost are being reseeded.

Central

  • Frost damage to early-seeded cereals and canola.
  • Seeding 80 percent complete.
  • Pastures slow to mature, extending livestock feeding in most areas.
  • Some flea beetle activity in volunteer canola.
  • Rain improved conditions for all seeded acres.

North

  • Seeding 80 percent compete, stalled by welcome rain.
  • Frost damage in early canola and some cereals.
  • Pastures starting to advance to fair condition.

Peace River

  • Seeding 80 percent complete with good moisture conditions.
  • Canola has begun to emerge.
  • Flea beetles found in volunteer winter wheat.
  • Pastures fair, but late due to low temperatures.

Conditions as of May 20.
