A semi hauling approximately 6500 chickens was involved in a accident on Highway 5 between Wadena and Kylemore, Saskatchewan on May 26th, at approximately 04:30 a.m.

Police say the semi lost a wheel and when the 27-year-old driver attempted to pull the truck back onto the road its cargo shifted and crates holding live chickens were scattered along the highway.

Many of the chickens were killed or injured in the crash.

The driver of the semi was treated initially on scene but then transported to Wadena Hospital by ambulance with what was reported to be non life threatening injuries.

Cleanup crews responded from Saskatoon and the Highway was down to one lane from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
