When following the path toward well-being, think about taking baby steps rather than quantum leaps, advised a psychiatric nurse speaking last week to the Manitoba Women’s Institute annual convention.

Kathy Foley said small steps make the journey to a healthier lifestyle less daunting.

Foley offered several other thoughts on how to pursue well-being. Take time to think about what needs to change to improve your overall well-being, she advised. That can include things that are physical, emotional, social, intellectual or spiritual.

The physical can be something as basic as proper nutrition and adequate rest and exercise, while emotional could be fostering an optimistic outlook, “trying to see the positive about things.”

Interest in biological crop inputs continues to grow

It was only a few years ago that interest in alternative methods such as biologicals to boost a crop’s nutrient…

As examples of intellectual changes, Foley cited things like striving to communicate well, being selective about what you need and want to do, and learning how to effectively budget money.

Friendship is one of the social things people might choose to think about. “It’s important to have friends,” Foley said. “Have a network of friends.”

Volunteering could be another way to enhance one’s social aspects. Foley said people who volunteer tend to lead healthier, happier and longer lives as a consequence.

The spiritual aspect of a person’s life is “what holds up all the other areas of your life,” Foley said. She defined spiritual as the things a person values in life.

“Are we living what our values are?” she asked. “Are you enjoying life or are you enduring life? Or, are you somewhere in between?”

Clearly identify your goals or dreams, advised Foley. Make a plan to reach the most valued wishes and picture what life will be like when those wishes are fulfilled. The most important step is following through on plans you have made.

Talk with people who will support you in your efforts, Foley said. Help and encouragement are important.

Evaluate your progress, said Foley, Ask whether you are feeling healthier and happier because of the changes you have made.
