March 31 is the deadline for Alberta home and property owners in flood fringe areas to apply for permits under the provincial disaster recovery program.

Many landowners were affected by floods in June 2013, which damaged property, homes, outbuildings and corrals. Those in areas designated as flood fringe, and who plan to undertake flood mitigation work, must apply for municipal permits by the deadline.

The 2014 flood season is approaching and although flooding on last year’s scale is unlikely, those in the flood fringe need to make plans in case they need future assistance, said an Alberta government news release.

Property owners must get a permit by March 31 showing intent to complete minimum mitigation measures, or else submit a notice of intent to mitigate.

“Flood mitigation must be undertaken by home and property owners receiving DRP funding in the flood fringe to qualify for government assistance in the event of future flooding,” said the release.

Forms are available by calling 888-671-1111.
