PrioNet Canada is no more.
The national research network, which formed eight years ago, studied diseases such as BSE and other brain wasting conditions.
It will
officially stop operating March 31.
The network, which was based at the University of British Columbia, connected researchers who studied prions and prion like diseases as well as their prevention.
Federal funding for the network ran out last year and the organization spent the last year winding up projects.
Administrator Michelle Wong said another network may be formed in the future.
“The funding has decreased to the point where we no long work as a network,” she said.
Researchers will continue to study the disease with other sources of funding, she added.
The Alberta Prion Research Institute will continue.
It is hosting a conference on international prion research in Banff, Alta., May 26-29. Sessions include the socioeconomic impacts of these diseases, structure and biology and prion diseases in animals and humans.
